Loïs Mailou Jones

Loïs Mailou Jones (1905–1998) was a pioneering painter and educator whose career spanned nearly eight decades. Trained across Boston, Paris, and extensive travels in Africa and the Caribbean, her expansive body of work includes luminous landscapes, textile designs, and figurative paintings that seamlessly fuse African, Caribbean, and European traditions. Jones taught at Howard University (1930–1977), mentoring generations of Black artists. Her persistence and international career successfully broke significant barriers for Black women artists in the 20th century.
