Mmakgabo Sebidi

Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi (b. 1943) is a South African painter and printmaker whose work explores memory, ritual, domestic landscapes, and communal life under apartheid and in the post-apartheid era. Raised in Mpumalanga, Sebidi draws on traditional wall- and floor-painting designs and the teachings of elders to create tactile, highly narrative canvases that blend figuration with symbolic patterning. Her work belongs to major collections in South Africa and abroad, and she is a recipient of prestigious awards, including the Standard Bank Young Artist Award and the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver).
