Elizabeth Catlett
Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012) was an American-born sculptor, printmaker, and teacher who became a Mexican citizen and created some of the most powerful visual statements of Black womanhood and labor in 20th-century art. Her linocuts, lithographs, and sculptures—from tender maternal portraits to the clenched-fist imagery associated with Black liberation—fuse the formal discipline of Mexican muralism with African American social realism. Catlett taught in Mexico for decades, becoming a vital link between North American and Latin American modernism.
