Jacob Lawrence

Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) is one of the most celebrated American painters of the 20th century. A modernist and social realist, Lawrence is best known for narrative series documenting African American history and daily life—most famously The Migration Series (60 panels, 1940–41), which chronicles the Great Migration. Characterized by flat planes of color, rhythmic composition, and sequential storytelling, his work fundamentally reframed how history and community were depicted in modern painting. He taught widely and received top honors including the National Medal of Arts.
